Nokia management, workers sign new wage agreement

Chennai: Five days after workers at the Nokia plant here called off their agitation, the management and the Nokia India Employees Progressive Union (NIEPU)has signed anew three-year wage agreement. "The agreement was signed in the presence of state Labour Minister T.M.Anbarasan. As per the agreement, the per month increase in salary for workers depending on their category will range between 2,000 and 3,000," a union official told IANS. According to him the gross salary of a worker post-revision will be in the range of 6,100 and 10,000. The previous wage agreement ended in March. According to the union official, other non-core benefits like uniforms and footwear were also agreed upon. The agreement also covers the reinstatement of the employees suspended in January when the workers resorted to a sit-in strike. Workers at Nokia India's plant near here make anything between 500,000 to 800,000 mobile phones per day. The company would incur a loss of around 120 crore per shift if production is halted for any reason.
