Nokia Siemens to upgrade BSNL's network

New Delhi: Global mobile telecom equipments major Nokia Siemens Networks Wednesday announced that it had bagged a contract to upgrade the network of India's state-run telecom giant Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL). This would enable BSNL to provide high quality bandwidth in 283 cities and 17 states with 800,000 new high-speed connections. BSNL would also roll out six million connections with the option of an additional three million by 2010, a statement said. BSNL would also provide an additional six million connections, of which three million would be used to offer customer's multimedia services like high-speed Internet, IPTV, games and video on demand over the next three years. Both the companies also signed an agreement to this effect, valid for three years. As per the agreement, Nokia Siemens would ensure the installation and commissioning of the new network. It would also train BSNL's technicians about the new network and look after its maintenance for five years. The Euro 17.1 billion Nokia Siemens Networks has operations in some 150 countries. It is a joint venture between Finnish handset-maker Nokia's Networks Business Group and the German carrier related businesses of Siemens Communications.
