No job, no pregnancy
By   Benny Thomas
Tuesday,21 April 2009, 04:40 hrs
Bangalore: Married a year ago, Kumar and his wife Savita are techies working with leading software firms in Bangalore. Last month, Savita lost her job after her company decided to lay off employees due to the financial meltdown. The couple have now decided not to have children in the near future, fearing that they may not be able to sustain their family with only Kumar's income.

There are also many personal sacrifices that the techies are making these days due to the fear of losing their job. "Postponement of marriage and pregnancy, which were already familiar with techies, has increased due to job loss. There are many people who are also aborting their child because of this fear", said Dr. Krishna, a Psychiatrist in Bangalore.

The current layoffs in the IT sector led to higher level of mental depression and anxiety among the techies. Now there are many who take similar decisions. "They cannot digest the news that they have lost their precious jobs, hence they are into depression and other problems follow", said Dr. Krishna.

Sometimes, job loss acts as a catalyst in raising the depression level that a person may already be facing. Illustrating this, Dr. Hebbar of Apollo Hospitals says, "The patients who come to me are not directly affected by job loss. They may be in depression because of some other reason like death of a loved one, or love failure. During such situations job loss makes them more depressed." According to Hebbar, the family and friends of the person who has lost the job may also get into depression. A techie who lost his job recently said, "I am feeling worthless and distressed, but I am trying to come out of this feeling."

Dr. Devakumar, a counselor in Bangalore says, "Some techies have started looking away from the technology field to sustain their life. Many patients have come to me very depressed, after they were thrown out of highly paid jobs. They now want to join any job, anywhere no matter what salary they are offered."

The numbers are escalating everyday and until the financial situation improves, this problem seems to persist. Dr. Krishna says, "The number of cases being reported has gone up drastically, it might have doubled or tripled over the past year, thanks to recession."

The time during the job loss can be used in doing something productive that can be useful in the future rather than taking some wrong decisions. "This temporary gap in their career can be used to upgrade their knowledge, by studying new things, thereby helping them to come out of depression", says Dr. Hebbar.

Accepting the current situation as part of one's life can also bring in some respite is what Dr. Krishna explains, "They should be able to accept failure as part of life and career should not be seen as a very serious issue." According to Dr. Devakumar, during the time of crisis, a person should wait patiently and take care of himself.

3: Friends,

First and foremost I would like to thank Benny Thomas for highlighting such issues relevant in the IT Industry specifically in INDIA. India has and been and is a world
leader when it comes to IT. There is no doubt about it.. But... the BIG BUT... did anyone forsee this.. This has happened in the past. Was this ever taken into Corporate RISK Assessment Analysis... I very much doubt it... There have been small IT companies who also capitalize on this... Today they are in a bad situation... I have experienced it since I have had some business dealings with them to help the Indian SME IT companies grow. Repeatedly, I have warned them about RISK assessment but the CEOs never paid heed to me. Who pays for it finally... its the poor techiees who envisage a BIG PARADISE... who dream they can make it BIG... It does not work this way with the LAW of FORCES....Everything that goes up comes crashing down.. We
all know it...

Now this is not the issue about the whole thing... Lets see who benefits this whole big DEAL... The POLITICIANS... ofcourse... Look at them at the recent elections conducted in the country... They look like a bunch of Corporate monkeys who are trying to climb a high tree. The ones who start eat the best fruits while they move up.. while those below keep struggling to climb higher...That's called Kissing the arse.. Is'nt that true... Look at the mud slinging... Am not going to take any political names or party names out here.. But this is honestly CRAP... I can't even understand their strategy.. They use each other and condemn each other publicly... WAKE UP MY DEAR FELLOWMEN... How can you tolerate all this... We talk everyday of being SOMEONE... or SOMETHING... Our dreams are shattered simply cause of these undesireable elements... Look at their age who are vying for the Prime ministership.. Do they really have a fit out there... Can they really DELIVER..

DO THEY.... These are the elements who cause infection within the system and they call themselves THE SYSTEM...

Now i read this article of OBAMA's cowardice cripples India's economy...Wow.. guys.. Are we dependent on USA...Are we.. Its just that we have adapted to a system cotrolled by US. Long long time ago it was England... I do not want to antagonize any one or any country here nor it is my wish to do so.. But what i am trying to point out Why do we need to be dependent on others... Stand up my country men.. this is the time now where everyone of us decide and challenge our leaders WHAT CAN OUR LEADERS DO FOR THE COUNTRY AND WHAT IS EXPECTED FROM US.. Do out politicians understand what is LEADERSHIP... I dont have to dwell much on this and those old politicians who should have retired at the age of 50 are still holding on to the reins and greedy for POWER...Not for you not for me but for their own benefits..

And here i read this article on NO JOB, NO PREGNANCY... hmmm.. I gave it a serious thought that made me sit here and write to all my INDIAN brothers and sisters... How long are we going to sustain this NON SENSE..... HOW LONG.... ENOUGH IS ENOUGH... WAKE UP...... I have literally spoken to a lot of my friends and colleagues who think that NO ONE can do anything about it... IS IT TRUE....

Let me make a few point out here what could POSSIBLY BE DONE:

1. Elect politicians who are LEADERS OF THE NATION and non-biased on religion, caste or creeed or who dont look for personal benefit. (Politicians are known to play a dirty game of using religion or caste or creed to retain their power)
2. We need to be a INDUSTRIALIZED developed country that is self dependant on our own self and dont need dependency on other countries. Look at the MANUFACTURING sector and let it build, grow and sustain.
3. We need to build an economic growth sustainable within our own country (We cant even sustain our own growth within our very own environment)
4. India needs to educate their masses... We still have a huge ratio of uneducated people... Convert this uneducated ratio into a BASIC 100% educated ratio and there will be a change of management in the SYSTEM... People will become SELF independent.I am seeing right now that NATIONALISM is converting EDUCATION to every citizen in other countries which guarantees a JOB which means self sufficiency.. DOES INDIA NEED uneducated people... Uneducation should be eradicated before 2020 to BUILD a country that NO other country can touch this over a billion people... NO OTHER...
5. Can the new LEADERS (politicians have this on the top of their AGENDA)?
6. We need to have young LEADERS... people who can drive the initiatives of the country... The government needs to have a special Office of Strategic Management to oversee these initiatives take place...

I would like to see enormous amounts of comments from all of you. I would also like you to pass this message on to your friends and relatives. We need to create an INDIAN forum to stage this issues.. I dont think the forums i see on NDTV and other channels have much effect... It is biased.. I respect the journalist there but there is an element of bias when it comes to publicly reporting... Isnt that means someone is trying to hide a few things or dont want to be embarassed......

Please Note: The authour of the above is a Strategist having global presence and interact with global forums and peers... All of the views expressed above are personal views and has no resemblence to anyone in particular.

For any personal views you can reach me on

Dont think like that. Marriage is a very valuable, precious & memorable part in our life. We can share everything with our life partner. She will be the one who encourages us in our life.

Generally how much money we need to have 3 times food & daily expences. Can't you earn atleast that much money in your life? Be positive in any circumstances. I hoppe everything will be all right with in short time. Believe your Hard work. May god bless you my friend. I wish you all the very best in your life.

Suddenly he learnt that his name displayed in the list of staff lay-offs. As there is no other way but to return back to India, poor Dude has now become a burden to their parents now.

i dont understand why do you people appreciate this ? When a villager comes to the city selling off his precious land, and when he takes a means for his sustainence by doing manual labourer , he does not stop becoming a father, In fact you would see his entire family along with him toiling under the hot sun, Why do qualified & educated people like you all get scared to take decisions in life Remember your KARMAS are your sufferings & happiness.

11: What is all this nonsense going on by way of comments on this issue. Whether to have a child or not --even in good times --is left to the couples concerned to decide . It is not everybody else s business to decide when they should have a child . Who are we to sit in judgement on their decision not to have a child when they go through tough times . It is their life and the choice is entirely theirs . Who gives you to right to control India s population. A worker or a poor man in slum has his own rationale to have children in spite of poverty. The middle class blokes can never understand the values or logic of a poor man and his intelligence to make decisions on his life.

15:Who should be ashamed Mr raunk?
A. software professional who want to plan everything for his/her child
B. A daily wage worker who doesn't have condoms, pills etc with him to prevent unwanted pregnancy. so he will make his wife pregnant every year once.

This daily wage worker will make his child work from early child hood which a software professional doesn't want to do so he won't plan for a child if he is in bad economic condition

What is social evil Mr raunk?
Increasing population of india is a social evil, people who are producing more than 2 child is a social evil,
A couple who wants to give their child a good future is not a social evil.

Who told you that a daily wage worker live happier life ?
they live in situation where everything is decided by others in his/her life , he has no control over it.
he can't stop having babies because he doesn't proper family planning guidance.

16: You are in which world? In Govt.Hospitals every thing is free for your kind information to control birth. Most of the daily wage workers have only one or two kids and they are far intelligent than you b.cos they watch Doordarshan (free to air) under any government/n.g.o's department. Contraceptives and pills are provided free of cost to avoid pregnancy. Who told you that a daily wage worker's wife gets pregnant every year? First improve your knowledge regarding the family planning schemes arranged by our government. You thought condoms and copper T's are afforded only by high class people. Yes, but these are available free of cost in Govt.Hospitals

19: Its true that the present situation has left many depressed and tensed in all angles, but this is not an end.
Being a matured person one should understand the reason for these happenings rather than taking abrupt steps such as, suicide, abortion, No Job-No Pregnancy, etc.
News like people are aborting their child due to fear are on rise, this means you are killing an unborn baby, who is about to open his/her eyes. One should take each situation be it tough as a challenge in life and should be ready to face it. So during this tough time, fight the challenge in front and don't ask yourself Why ME? instead say TRY me!

24: It is really surprising to read the above article. A couple avoiding pregnancy as wife doesn't have job. It is ridiculous!
This means a husband (especially a techie is dependent on wife's salary for maintaining a child. If that is the case, then it is really a shame on our part. There are lot of families where husband earns and wives are at home looking after the household things and children without any problem. Man should earn for her, and let her stay without any job tension. A child is a boon from God, if you delay in conceiving now then it may be a problem in the later stage. Now it is right time to conceive as there will no job pressure during pregnancy for the wives and the baby will be healthy to. Why to make these type of doctors happy for no reason?

28: Dear Mr. Proud Father,
FYI - There are ppl who are earning 10-15k pm or less and still they afford to survie with kid (being a single earner). This is big mistake they are doing in their life for doing such things.

They themselves puts in trouble for having lavish life, asking for hikes, baby sitter, car, dirvers, servants, Big flats, parties, malls, shopping, a seperate flat staying depart from your self parents home in the same city and etc..

Mostly some partners are habitual of living in lavish. I would say man, just recollect your scrap mind and go back to the world where ealier our parents were surving and how they grow their kids like us.

Well, Why can\'t few (i would say all) married womens give up their jobs and stay back home to take care of kids, home and n\'joy, have fun, so that he/she could be relax and this recession would stop. One person is ok if he/she is earning.

Shame on both - earning couples

BTW is was all together a seperate topic - but Mr. ProudFather had.... Well but Im not sorry for both earning couples. Yes I know you have your priorities like liabilities, socity, culture, cannot stay with husband\'s parents etc... But you have to start accepting these and start making this habbit now.

It's not his fault. It could be the same case with you. In fact, it's a good decision now not to have a baby. The couple is more practical. The above statement from Dr Krishna is really not good, because Doctors are treated next to God as they save lives. A doctor saying "I am happy to get more patents day by day because of recession and thnks to recession" is really not good. No doctor should wish people suffer from health problems.
