Bangalore: In order to take charge as the chairperson of the Unique Identification Authority, Nandan Nilekani resigned from the board of Infosys. Under the new role, Nilekani will take forward the government initiative to issue Multipurpose National Identity Cards (MNIC) for every citizen, to tackle illegal immigration and terrorists.

He will also relinquish his post of co-chairman to be inducted in the rank of a Cabinet Minister in the Indian Government. The resignation will be effective from July 9, 2009. A National Population Register will be created by 2011, under which the MNIC cards will be issued.

Nandan Nilekani is a co-founder of Infosys and has served as a director on the Infy's board since its inception in 1981. Between March 2002 and June 2007, he served as the company's Managing Director and CEO. Thereafter, he was re-designated as the co-chairman of the board of directors.

12: This is the most significant news since the early 1990's when PVNarasimha Rao brought in Dr Manmohan Singh as the then Finance Minister. My interaction with NN was in 1993-94 (days prior to Infosys glory) when he would participate in the ET Brand Equity Quiz and I would watch over the sidelines. I had the opportunity to visit the then Infosys campus. As I left Bangalore in 1997, my link to the prosperity of Infosys lost and that ended my proximity to NN, NM, Pai et al.
Along with NN at this important post, I honestly wish Narayan Murthy is made the head of an Anti Corruption Bureau with full authority to bring in changed systems in the key government departments - land registration, agricultural income tax claims, and IT department. Probably, a part of the systems will be put in place by NN's smart card systems.
Also, this is one more of the silent revolution that Sonia Gandhi is bringing about in this country with the face of Dr Manmohan Singh. The earlier part of revolution was the Right to Information Act (RTI) and a number of poverty alleviation programs of the UPA.
Good luck NN, thank you Dr Manmohan Singh, thank you Sonia. Wish my Karnataka state's infrastructure is improved and the state in particular and the country in general are able to bring about Tourism reforms to take the country to greater heights.

15: We all have great regard for people like Nandan and Narayan murthy . I am sure he will succeed in his assignment if he is really allowed to function the way he wants and implement solutions he thinks fit --without any political and bureaucratic interference.
But unfortunately I am reminded of 1990s when another distinguished and accomplished Indian from US --Sam Pitroda -with a lot of common sensical knowledge about India and its typical problems , in spite of living in US --was brought by Rajiv Gandhi to India . He was harassed and hounded out by stupid and power centric political bosses and feudal beauracrats of this country . He had to return to US in disgust after Rajiv`s death.
Let us all hope the same does not happen to Nandan.
Wish you all the best, Nandan Nilekani .

18: Dear Sir,
Congratulations for your new role to develope india. We are having lot of expectation from energetic people like you , who will help to make India as Super Power. We hope that as the chairman of MNIC , you will help india to give counter response to TERRORISM. In my view India is one of the fastest developing country even after than it is not able to control these terrorist attacks , which is a big shame for India in world context. We expect from you people to show a path to India to develope itself with open eyes , so that India can become a terrorism free state.Only than people will have believe in their country otherwise if same terrorist attacks will be continuing than India will become a failed country like Pakistan , that none of us want.

With Best of Luck.Any help required to you from us will be welcome.

The UID project was there in my mind since last 10 years but as individual i cannot do so, i m very happy and also hope soon to be start this project i shall pray for this.

I have one thought at back of mind if it can clik if we replace the PAN Card by this UID as the purpose of both card is nearly same, to create whole new database definatly it will take time but not impossible but i would like to say that by slightly changing the database and gathering more information or completely changing the database will be better idea as PAN card is already government undertaking.

34: CONGRATULATIONS Mr.Nilekani! Kudos Central Govt. This is the way to go. I guess this is what is required to run a country like this. A Stalwart of this sort can DEFENITELY put the otherwise wayward Govt. organisations on track. This would be the way to go with all PSU's like AI etc. Put such people who have run huge Business Houses at the helm of affairs or turn the PSU's to Corporations functioning on the same lines as private organisations can help pull back many of the ailing PSU's from red to the green.
CONGRATULATIONS Mr.Nilekani once again.

36:I completely agree with you. We need people like Nandan in the Indian Government. Well the Unique Identification number has been a need for a country like India and should have been implemented by our government a good couple of decades ago. It is a pity that in a country of 1 billion people, we cannot find good leaders to run the country. And we boast of having the world's best engineers and best doctors. I am sure, with this move some people in the government have shown some signs of opening up there eyes. Well all the best to Mr. Nilekani and I am sure if US can have SSN for each of its citizens, we can have it done in India under his leadership as well. Task is huge but not impossible.

38: Congratulations. It is really a very difficult job of the chairperson of the Unique Identification Authority. It is imaging the complete bio-data of each and every Indian citizen, by birth or by legal means. It requires the system at the central level to check the entire data whenever the Unique ID card is used and its variables should be modified as required like address etc.. This means the entire country should be connected to this center. It will be a feather in his (as well in his team) cap if it is done in a specified time , a tool which serves the basic purpose without fail and makes for any one an impossible task to duplicate like Indian currency notes. That can certainly check not only terrorism, but corruption and many more illegal activities of Indians, Indian legislators, judiciary not forgetting the Indian Executive. India then, can vouch to be a cleaner country to do business if the system is properly implemented.

44: Dear Sir ! I like to congratulate you for the work you r choosen and for whom you have been choosen .

Sir this national identity cards .. again we are copying UK or USA type security cards ( social security numbers or cards which has all the details of the citizens).

Since i hope this is not the same one as i said above ,sir we have faith in you .. just make something unique ..which has not yet been done in world .. today in India even passport is made duplicate ..i am talking in that perspective .. so MNIC cards should not be a copy of social security numbers or cards given in USA or Similar in UK ..IT SHOULD BE SOME KIND OF A UNIQUE .. I had thought about this and found one great idea .. but i cant post here .

I have full confidence on my way of thinking and making this cards more unique and much better in terms of safety to nation ..Sir i know you r genious and have more great ideas than me .. but sir dont copy stuffs from any other country since our country is quite different ..and for this we have to think differently.

We need similar more intiatives to be taken by the GOI. One key issue is Governance. The new government should have an Office of Stratetgic Management who look into key initiatives required by the country and this is the best time to do it. Governance is a must to eradicate the corruption India suffers. We have so many top men as our industrialist and everyone of them will tell you that India needs Governance right now.

152:One of the major reason behind these crimes(immigration, threats, escaping from tax, etc...) are lacking of strong identity. Once if we have a strong identification system, culprits can be easily captured most of the times and it will prevent them to do the wrong things because of strong laws. Everyone should have an unique identity. I guess this will be a good initiative with the present technology to solve this problem. Even if it is a card and you need to carry it at all time, it should be fine, because this is the minimum requirement to prove yourself that you are a valid citizen of the country.

I appreciate this forward movement.

I personally feel making a passport mandatory for every citizen could be another solution, and maybe more viable. Of course, if great minds of the like of Mr Nandan Nilekani has deviced this idea, there must, and should, be some reason for it.

Anyways, I hope this really gets implemented, and not shelved like millions of such initiatives before (the NSSN could be a classic example of this!).

Cheers

174:You are mistaken. He can always be available to Infy as has been Mr Narayan. What is the best is people like him are in fact needed to dust out our B.A.S.T.A.R.Ds from our politician community. Only thing is that he needs to ensure that he is not used by same politician community to get a temporary fame from indians and later on thrown off in anonymity like T.N. Seshan who's initiatives for Poll reforms and Id card were objected a lot and finally today nobody knows where he is and probably next few years people will ask who was Seshan.

177: Indeed it is a welcome move ! As we say people will belive in actions and not on speeches . Here is a great example of action from able Government . Beside this is one of the best example of maturing our Government function as " Good Corporate World"

All the best to Mr.Nandan and many thanks to PM.

Also, Nilekani being a part of it and leading the same would be really good. Lets hope everything goes with the best efforts and hope the same that it will be a remarkable achievement for our Country Of India to curb terrorism and immigrants.

187: Greatly appreciated until unless it's not a business move. He has a great business sense in his mind. If he get this project done for his Infosys, life long the company can earn revenues on support even if he develop a code free to MNIC. If he is there in the Infy, it's very hard to compete with the Competitor.

189: Everyone is saying good initiative by Government and Congrats Mr. Nandan as if we have nothing to do with it and everythng will happen by itself magically.Though I am a proud Infoscion and happy with this turn of events,I will say that nothing in India can succeed without each and every one of us doing our bit (paying taxes, reporting corruption etc.) and that too not when it suits us but all the time everytime and for once not give the lame excuses like "what can one person do","system is corrupt" - we are the system!

190: its just a political move...it won't result in anything concrete. So stop dreaming...everyone....

Once politics steps in, it won't be easy for an industrialist to work with full freedom. Everyone will want a chunk of the money given to the project. 5 years later.....lets see....another name bites d dust

193: What to do - half the portion of our system is corrupt. Unless and until, major rewamp happen, who ever go into the system, will become corrupt. Classic example - Rajiv Gandhi. Initially he was called as Mr. Kleen and later "BOFORS". Now it is the turn to Nandan. We have to wait and watch.
