New Nano catches fire; Tata terms it 'stray incident'
Mumbai: Satish Sawant was happily driving Tata Nano home from the showroom, when it caught fire within minutes of the drive. Sawant had given himself a birthday gift after years of hard labour. It was the first four-wheeler owned by Satish Purushothaman Sawant, a software engineer with Capgemini India. He said his wife could smell smoke in the car as they passed the Airoli junction on the Eastern Express Highway but they ignored it. "Minutes later, she forced me stop the car on the highway and get the vehicle checked. As we got off the car, we saw smoke from the engine. A good samaritan helped my wife and son get off the car. As we got off the car, it was engulfed by fire. They (Tata Motors and Concorde) just sent a letter saying 'inconvenience is regretted' and they have offered to reimburse the entire amount or give a brand new car," said Sawant to The Indian Express. When asked to the company about the incident, Tata Spokesperson said, "We are still trying to understand why this happened and what the reasons behind the incident were." He also termed it as 'stray incident'. Last year also the company had got some complaints of smoke and fire, which had occurred due to faulty switch in the car's steering column.
