New Nano catches fire; Tata terms it 'stray incident'
Mumbai: Satish Sawant was happily driving Tata Nano home from the showroom, when it caught fire within minutes of the drive. Sawant had given himself a birthday gift after years of hard labour.

It was the first four-wheeler owned by Satish Purushothaman Sawant, a software engineer with Capgemini India. He said his wife could smell smoke in the car as they passed the Airoli junction on the Eastern Express Highway but they ignored it. "Minutes later, she forced me stop the car on the highway and get the vehicle checked. As we got off the car, we saw smoke from the engine. A good samaritan helped my wife and son get off the car. As we got off the car, it was engulfed by fire. They (Tata Motors and Concorde) just sent a letter saying 'inconvenience is regretted' and they have offered to reimburse the entire amount or give a brand new car," said Sawant to The Indian Express.

When asked to the company about the incident, Tata Spokesperson said, "We are still trying to understand why this happened and what the reasons behind the incident were." He also termed it as 'stray incident'. Last year also the company had got some complaints of smoke and fire, which had occurred due to faulty switch in the car's steering column.

2: So the fire couldn't possibly have been started by that ridiculous good luck charm hanging out of the engine compartment, right?

Hey, I've got an idea: I'm Chinese, and we use firecrackers on New Year's, so if I dump a bunch of firecrackers into the gas tank, then the Tata will always go with the vigor and excitement of the New Year, right?

RIGHT?

3: Not a new Nano or a production Nano at all. It was a two year old pre-production model intended to be used only for display purposes which caught fire. It was never supposed to be sold.

If this is true then Tatas cannot get away with such excuses. If they cannot differentiate between a pre-production and a post production model, then there is something seriously wrong with their procedures and system. Thank God, Concorde Motors happens to be a Tata Venture, else they would have blamed the Dealer for their shortcomings. I wonder how many more customer have been delivered with these pre-production models as these can be potential time bombs on our roads . What would have happened if the nano had caught fire at a filling station.

Another Tatas Loyal customer is fighting a legal battle with them for over 4 years relating to quality issues for having delivered a defective car of poor quality. http://bit.ly/95YyFZ
