Bangalore: The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) has introduced its new Green IT gadget. Using the gadget, which is a web-based smart metering system, the users will be able to control energy consumption remotely over a broadband Internet connection. CSIRO worked with Energy Response, an energy service company and Saturn South, a hardware designer for developing the system. The mini smart-meter, which is targeted at smaller energy users, can be installed in switchboards and then be managed remotely from a centralized control platform. According to CSIRO project leader, Martin de Groot, with the help of common broadband Internet connections, CSIRO is able to build and deploy affordable, real-time platforms to deliver energy services to individuals. After the installation of the system, the users get alerts in their mobile phones about significant changes in energy use in the home.
