Nazomi Communications Inc., a company that develops chips and software to enhance the performance of software running on the Java platform for cell phones, said it named Suresh Agarwal vice president of marketing. In this position, Agarwal will focus on all of the company's marketing activities. He will report to Jay Kamdar, president and chief executive officer, and will be based out of Nazomi's Santa Clara, California, headquarters. Prior to joining Nazomi, Agarwal was director of marketing of new products for ChipWrights. In April, Nazomi announced that its application processor has been selected by Samsung Electronics for a new line of multimedia phones that was launched on March 31. Nazomi's chip, a processor for Java and multimedia phones, will accelerate the applications in Samsung's SCH-X850 and SCH-E350 handsets. For example, video viewed on the new multimedia phones wouldn't seem choppy because of the start-up's application processor. Nazomi's JA108 chip also speeds up Java applications, 2-D and 3-D graphics and Flash animation. Nazomi has opened offices in Korea, China, and Taiwan. The firm will also open an office in India for back-end chip development and some software development. Nazomi also has locations in various countries of Europe, along with the UK. The company abandoned a round of Series D funding due to poor valuation in the fourth quarter of 2003; the company had aimed to raise $10 million to $15 million. Founded in September 1998, Nazomi has raised $23 million from Ignite Group, Redwood Ventures, New Enterprise Associates, and Alliance Ventures.
