NIIT to assess recruits for IT companies

New Delhi: Asia's largest IT trainer, NIIT Ltd, will soon offer assessment services to the country's leading IT and ITES companies to help them recruit the best professionals.
"We are going to invest 
70 million in the next three years. This new initiative by NIIT will enable IT companies save time and money that goes into the recruitment process," Vijay Thadani, chief executive, NIIT, told IANS.
With this new venture - NIIT Litmus - the company plans to achieve a turnover of 500 million by 2009 servicing a market worth 1.5 billion, he said.
"According to Nasscom (National Association of Software and Service Companies) the IT-ITES segment will generate over 1 million jobs by 2009, but the industry is facing an acute shortage of qualified professionals and it is also unable to manage its recruitment needs," Thadani reiterated.
"Ten million recruitments will happen by 2009," he said.
"We will set up dedicated testing centres where the potential job seeker can take a test which will be modelled as per that particular company's need. And then we will send the assessment to the company," he elaborated.
Referring to the recent data theft case in a call centre in Kolkata, he said: "Companies are facing an acute shortage of qualified and trained manpower. Our test will also focus on a candidate's psychological condition."
Convergys, a leading business process outsourcing company, which is planning to increase its headcount rapidly, is one of the first two large customers of NIIT Litmus.
Refusing to divulge details on the Indian clients that the company has roped in, Thadani said: "We have so far conducted six million tests for our clients in the US."
US-based IT firms like Google, Gateway, BEA currently use NIIT's recruitment test.
The assessment initially will be employer-centric, which means, the companies will indicate NIIT on which parameters should a potential recruit be tested.
As of now, the dedicated test centres of NIIT Litmus will be set up in four metros - Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Chennai by the end of December.
"Initially we will go to the metros, however, we will be able to reach 150 cities, both big and small in the next three years," he added.
