NIIT ties up with IIT for bio-informatics programme

NEW DELHI: NIIT Ltd., one of India's leading software makers and computer training providers, said Monday it had tied up with the premier Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi for bio-informatics learning programme. As part of the agreement, NIIT and IIT Delhi will train a science post graduates to build careers in the fast growing field of bio-informatics, said a NIIT statement issued here. The programme will be offered under the aegis of Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT) at IIT Delhi, it said, adding engineering and medicine graduates will also be eligible to enrol for this unique program. "The new millennium has ushered in rapid advances in bio-sciences, creating a deluge of information with several scientific and technological challenges and opportunities," said R.S. Sirohi, director of IIT Delhi. "The quest to meet these challenges creates a huge demand for highly skilled bio-informatics professionals." According to technology market research firm International Data Corporation, IT spending in biosciences will cross $138 million in India by 2005. The worldwide spend on use of IT in bio-informatics is also likely to spiral upwards with estimates of $20 billion by 2007, it says. "Our association with IIT Delhi in the area of bio-informatics is a reiteration of our commitment to prepare career aspirants for emerging technology professions," said Rajendra Pawar, chairman of NIIT Ltd. Spread over six-months, the programme in bio-informatics and computational biology includes training in fundamentals of modern biology, IT and hands on training in bio-informatics on the supercomputer.
