MUMBAI: Leading software and IT education company NIIT Limited today said the IT education sector was set for major growth in months to come following positive indications from the industry. The worst period for software and IT education industry was over as a semblance of normalcy could be seen returning to the sector, the NIIT Chief Operating Officer P Rajendran said. Pointing out that the top eight software companies had shown a 36 per cent growth in the number of new professionals hired during 2002-03, he said that this trend was likely to continue. Leading IT majors like Wipro, Infosys, GE, Satyam, TCS and NIIT itself were expanding operations and were on the lookout for trained software manpower. When asked to comment on the poor growth of IT education business of NIIT during the quarter ended June 30 this year, he said, "It is correct that NIIT posted 8 per cent growth in the last quarter. It was better in the sense that the year 2002-03 saw the worst when all the players had shown negative growth and as the industry leader, NIIT had recorded 2 per cent growth." Stressing the fact that NIIT had launched its strategy to counter the downward trend as it started appearing in April 2001, Rajendran said, "The real growth will come only in the next quarter. In the last nine months, we have had 3,01,000 new students enroll at NIIT."
