NIIT arm plans more GIS centers

NEW DELHI: ESRI India, the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) arm of IT major NIIT Technologies, has drawn up plans to launch the authorized learning center (ALC) program with a view to preparing professionals in GIS technology. ESRI India that started the first franchised GIS ALC in Chennai earlier this year, plans to partner with entrepreneurs to open education centers in 10 major towns. ESRI India will train career aspirants and professionals by transferring world-class GIS technology to the ALCs, to be set up by entrepreneurs to the international standards. GIS users in Government and the private sector can also avail themselves of training at the ALCs, a release said here. GIS is a computer-based system capable of assembling, storing, manipulating and displaying locationally defined data. GIS is used for digital map making, site selection, finding the best route, solving environmental problems, exploration of natural resources, urban planning and solutions for other problems. The ALC program aims to meet the growing demand for skilled GIS professionals in transportation, civic services, utilities, forestry, earth and atmospheric sciences.
