NASSCOM to set up self-regulatory organization

New Delhi: The National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM) will soon set up a self-regulatory organiZation (SRO) to ensure sustenance of information security practices and standards in the IT industry. According to research done by the association, India is safer than most countries and to maintain the status it has brought out certain initiatives for the industry to follow. "The SRO is an independent self-regulatory body that will seek to enforce data protection standard for the Indian BPOs (business process outsourcing)," NASSCOM vice president Sunil Mehta told reporters here on Tuesday. Adding the organization would be in operation in the next three-six months' time, Mehta said: "We are looking to get a chief to head the organization. The SRO will help assuage the growing international concerns as to how personal information is safeguarded in India." Nasscom has been working very closely with Indian law enforcing organizations and has set up cyber-training labs in Mumbai and Thane for training police officers in cyber crime investigations. "More such labs will be coming up in Pune, Bangalore, Delhi, Hyderabad and Kolkata," said NASSCOM president Kiran Karnik. Karnik also discussed the various achievements attained by the National Skills Registry (NSR) that was launched in January and has already registered 25,000 employees and 24 companies. "Through NSR, independent verification of data and biometric identification will not only increase security for companies and customers but also protect employees from criminal elements seeking to misuse their identities."
