Bhubaneswar: State-run National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO) said that work on expanding capacity at its alumina refinery in Orissa's Koraput district has commenced. The commissioning of capacity enhancement has begun at the power plant, the evaporation plant stacker and bauxite circuit. Other packages in the refinery are now under advanced stage of commissioning, the company said in a statement. The company is enhancing production capacity at the refinery in Damanjodi, nearly 400 km from state capital Bhubaneswar, from 1.575 million tonnes to 2.1 million tonnes, which will be further upgraded to 2.275 million tonnes, the statement said. The work at the refinery lagged after a Maoist attack there two years ago, forcing several contractors and their workers to leave. The company also aimed to increase the annual capacities of bauxite mine to 63,00,000 tonnes, alumina refinery to 21,00,000 tonnes and aluminium smelter to 4,60,000 tonnes after its 4,402 crore second phase expansion, it said.
