Motorola acquires 280 North for $20 Million
Bangalore: In a year that has seen a slew of acquisitions; the latest to join the bandwagon is Motorola. The company has acquired 280 North, at a rumored amount of $20 million. This deal gives Motorola the access to Cappuccino, a programming platform that helps the task of creating deeper web apps. A Motorola representative told TechCrunch that the deal would help "foster the Android ecosystem" through web-based apps and technology. The Blur UI, which is present in most of Motorola's smartphones, will see some effect as a result of the deal. The Blur UI will give Droid X and Droid 2 owners a slew of information and control widgets. Another interesting aspect of the deal is that 280 North has been started by Francisco Tolmasky and Ross Boucher, both former employees of Apple. While Tolmasky was involved in the early iPhone team and helped develop Maps and Safari, Boucher worked with Apple in developing the charting, recommendation and search engines for the iTunes Store. Now it remains to be seen how Motorola uses the services of 280 North to give competition to its counterparts.
