Kolkata: AcTechies across the country are showing keen interest in the government's multi-billion dollar Unique Identification (UID) project, which is headed by Infosys Co-founder Nandan Nilekani.cording to a data by Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), over 500 applications were received from professionals of some major tech firms for voluntary and sabbatical positions, reports Sumali Moitra of Times News Network. Apart from IIT and IIM graduates, even professionals with a Harvard degree are interested to contribute to the success of the project. The UIDAI has already taken on board four volunteers and three others on a sabbatical basis. Currently, the Authority is in the process of short-listing and processing letters of a further eight volunteer positions for its technology facility at Bangalore. Additionally, the UIDAI is engaged in selecting another eight candidates for sabbatical roles with the organisation. Software industry body Nasscom has chipped in with the names of six techies from among its member companies. UIDAI director General and Mission Director R.S. Sharma said the response for volunteer/sabbatical positions had not come as a surprise because of the overwhelming 'buy-in' among all sections of stakeholders. Incidentally, the Authority has recently come out with guidelines for also roping in students as interns.
