Kolkata: London-based steel baron L.N. Mittal on Sunday evening called on West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya and discussed investment proposals in the state that is now witnessing an industrial resurgence. "West Bengal is an attractive investment destination," Mittal told reporters after his maiden, hour-long meeting with Bhattacharya at the state secretariat. "Several ideas were discussed but there was nothing concrete. We exchanged our views. We had discussions on various global subjects too," he said. "Changes in West Bengal under Buddhadeb Bhattacharya's leadership are impressive. I am coming here after some years and am quite impressed to see wide and clear roads. It is a much clear town now," said Mittal whose family owns 44 percent of Arcelor Mittal, the world's largest steel company. The industrialist, who is the fifth richest person in the world according to the Forbes magazine and one of the 100 most influential people in a list prepared by the Time magazine, spent a long time in Kolkata during his growing-up year and studied in the St. Xavier's College here. The discussion between Mittal and Bhattacharya revolved round the power sector and a chemical hub, according to informed sources. They said the chief minister requested the NRI industrialist to invest in the state. According to them, the West Bengal government is pitching for Mittal's participation in the chemical hub likely to come up at Nayachar in East Midnapore. Mittal arrived Kolkata with wife Usha Saturday to attend a family wedding at the Mittal House in Alipore.
