Microsoft to close MSN Direct
New Delhi: Microsoft has announced that it is closing its MSN Direct GPS service, as according to a notice posted on the MSN Direct website, the service will be available only till January 1, 2012. "MSN Direct service will be available only until January 1, 2012. The customers can continue to enjoy the full benefits of MSN Direct, along with service and support until that date. Pro-rated refunds for unused portions of existing one-time payment and other subscription plans will be automatically credited after January 1, 2012," the post said. MSN Direct is a service integrated into some GPS devices that uses FM signals to provide traffic data, weather, stocks, movie schedules, and various other similar information. It uses FM radio frequencies to deliver such information. This service is most often associated with Microsoft's Smart Watch program, which was the first to use the MSN Direct service to deliver information like news headlines, stock quotes, weather and traffic information to special wristwatches. GPS makers like Garmin and Pioneer sell a range of devices that can receive MSN Direct data.
