Washington: Microsoft announced its association with nearly two dozen hardware makers to release Windows-based tablet computers. This step would give competition to rival devices like Apple's iPad. Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer said, "This year one of the most important things that we will do in the smart device category is really push forward with Windows 7-based slates and Windows 7 phones. Over the course of the next several months you will see a range of Windows 7-based slates." The tablets will come from hardware makers like Asus, Dell, Sony, Toshiba, Samsung among others. Windows Mobile, the cellphone operating system of Microsoft, has been losing ground to Apple's iPhone, the Android platform from Google and the Blackberry from Research in Motion. Commenting on this development, Ballmer said, "We really did miss almost a release cycle." Let us hope Microsoft's mammoth deal with the hardware makers will show the desired results. Looking forward to the battle of the giants with the armory of tablet computers.
