Microsoft names 5 South Asians as research fellows

REDMOND: Five graduate students of South Asian descent were honored by Microsoft when it recently announced the 13 recipients of its 2004-2005 Microsoft Research Fellowships. Assem Agarwala of the University of Washington, Ranveer Chandra of Cornell University, Sumit Gulwani of the University of California, Berkeley; Mayur Naik of Stanford University, and Chandra Nair, also of Stanford University, were among the 13 recipients.The Microsoft Fellowships are awarded to the "the best and the brightest" in computer science, mathematics and electrical engineering to pursue doctorate-level research for two academic years. The fellowships cover 100 percent of tuition and fees, provide a stipend for living expenses and include an allowance for attending professional conferences and seminars. Each fellow also receives a laptop computer, and his or her advisor receives a donation of $1,000.
