Bangalore: Besides all the criticism Microsoft have offered a solution to its security threat. If Windows Update detects that the PC doesn't have a valid antivirus solution in place, it will offer to install the free Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) software onto the computer through the Optional Updates User Interface for Windows XP users, Vista and 7 who have subscribed to the Microsoft Update. Symantec and McAfee are rather stoic and do not see a real threat in MSE. As they have already repeated since its launch, MSE is considered basic and less sophisticated than their protection solutions. Trend Micro shows more worried by cons, or at least annoyed by the attitude of Microsoft and implies an anticompetitive practice. Two security software makers have already complaining about Microsoft using its update service to deliver its free antivirus software to Windows users who don't have such protection on their computers. And some others feel that delivering software tied to updates is a concern. The feeling is that Windows Update is not a choice for users, and it should not be used as a way of distributing software not directly tied to the Operating System.
