Bangalore: Microsoft’s Indian online store was subject to a “limited compromise” attack, the company said today in a statement. According to a report by PC World, usernames and passwords of a number of customers might have been leaked, and users are advised to change their passwords.

The website was vandalized over the weekend by a group of self-proclaimed Chinese hackers, who allegedly published partially obscured users’ details. The so-far unknown Evil Shadow hacker collective revealed on a Mandarin blog post that it had changed the online store’s main page, and placed China’s flag on it because it wanted to catch Microsoft’s attention. 7z1, a member of the collective called himself a “patriotic hacker” on the blog post.

According to a report from the Economic Times, the Indian edition of the Microsoft Store is operated by local company Quasar Media. Rahul Roy, a spokesperson said “I am not sure when the site will be up again or what happened.”

The PC World report stated that 1,651 websites in India had been defaced in the month of November alone, according to data from the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In). Some of the top Indian websites that have been hacked previously include Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
