Metal stocks accelerate again

Bangalore: It seems that buying interest returned to Indian stock markets last week, as all the sectors ended in green and the largest gainer was the BSE Metals index which ended 7.06 percent higher. As on March 9, 2010, the Metal index market capitalization is of

619,001.89 crore.

Among the gainers' list, BSE Metals index was followed by the Realty sector which gained 6.91 percent. On the weaker side, the BSE IT sector registered a small gain of 1.06 percent and was followed by the BSE Oil and Gas sector which gained 1.78 percent. Data with markets watchdog Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) showed that foreign funds bought scrips worth $942.05 million during the four-day trading week. Markets were closed Monday on account of Holi.

With valuations expanding and the commodity rally relying on an uncertain global recovery, metal stocks have been one of the frontrunners in the market rally this year. In the current scenario, investors can avoid fresh exposure to metal stocks. Apart from the fundamental question of whether global demand will see a meaningful recovery, there is the fact that base metals have been the hottest stocks in the recent rally.
