McAfee sets up response team in India

BANGALORE: Computer virus buster McAfee, the new name for Network Associates, has set up AVERT (anti virus emergency response team) in India. AVERT employs researchers in thirteen countries on five continents.
Two of the largest AVERT teams are in the UK and USA, and the third largest team will be in India, said McAfee officials, declining, however, to reveal the size of the team.
At a press meet here on Wednesday, Christopher Bolin, executive vice president and chief technology officer, McAfee, said that AVERT services include evaluating the potential risk that a computer virus can cause, providing updated information on virus and inform customers about new vulnerabilities and help them with proactive system updates.
The velocity and vector of virus has in the recent past gone up dramatically. Mr Bolin said that 10 years ago the number of virus collections that antivirus companies had was 1000.
It now is in the 100,000 range, he said. Software platforms that exhibit most vulnerability are Microsoft Windows and RedHats Linux.
Every virus can be lethal and the challenge for us is to respond quickly.
Mr Bolin said that the number of virus attack until now this year has crossed 50, which is much more than whole of last year.
The AVERT team does not employ regular software professionals but exceptional engineers who can solve complex problems and can think in a creative way. In AVERT we have classical jazz players to doctorates, he added.
