Maruti to set up 
3.5 billion diesel engine facility

NEW DELHI: India's automobile major Maruti Udyog Ltd will set up a 
3.5 billion ($77 million) facility to manufacture diesel engines for cars.
The move follows Maruti's parent company Suzuki Motor Corporation entering into a product license agreement with Fiat Auto and Adam Opel in Europe to obtain technology for the manufacture of 1.3 litre, state-of-the-art diesel engine based on common rail injection system, the company said Tuesday.
"This measure has been undertaken to meet the growing demand for diesel engine cars in the Indian market," Maruti stated after the company board of directors took the decision.
Planned to be operational in 2006, the new facility will have capacity to manufacture 100,000 diesel engines annually.
"Our decision to invest in a new facility to manufacture diesel engines underlines our parent, Suzuki Motor Corporation's continued commitment to India. It is in keeping with Maruti's strategy of providing suitable products for diverse segments of customers," Jagdish Khattar, managing director of Maruti said.
