NEW DELHI: Maruti Udyog Limited, India's largest carmaker, said Monday its sales dropped 4.2 percent in August compared to the same period last year due to a strike at a major vendor. Maruti Udyog, a unit of Japanese auto giant Suzuki Motor Corporation, sold 32,127 units last month, down from 33,537 in August, 2002, a company statement said. "Production at Maruti was affected owing to a strike at our major vendor, DCM Engineering, which supplies the bulk of our requirement of an important engine component," said the company statement. Maruti, which makes 10 car models including the largest selling Maruti 800, said alternative arrangements were being made but a shortfall with respect to its requirement continued. "Efforts are on to increase the manufacturing capability of our alternative suppliers and enable them supply higher quantities of the component to us," it added. The company said the sales figure of 32,127 for August included 2,684 vehicles that were exported. The company plans to export over 39,000 cars this year.
