Maruti sales down 10 percent in December

New Delhi: The government's move to reduce the Cenvat duty as part of the stimulus package announced early December does not seem to have brought cheers to the auto industry, with India's largest auto firm, Maruti Suzuki, registering a 10 percent negative growth in December. Data released by the company Thursday showed Maruti sold 56,293 vehicles last month, compared to 62,515 units sold in the same month in 2007. The company marked a negative year-on-year growth in terms of vehicles sold for the third successive month, with the worst performance coming in November when its sales plummeted by over 24 percent. The year-to-date figures for nine months starting April also put Maruti in the red with a 1.3 percent dip in sales. The company sold 555,529 units during this period. The company's flagship Maruti 800 model was the worst hit, showing a 59.6 percent decline though its offerings in the A3 segment - SX4 and Swift D'zire - posted a robust 98.2 percent growth.
