Markets hold on to gains in afternoon

Mumbai: Indian equities held on to their morning gains Tuesday afternoon on the back of increased buying in banking and realty stocks. A key index was ruling 1.89 percent higher about 90 minutes before the closing bell. The 30-scrip Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) sensitive index (Sensex), which opened at 9,549.52 points, was trading at 9,601.86 points - a rise of 177.84 points or 1.89 percent from its previous close. Similarly, the S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) gained 1.61 percent from its last close to rule at 2,893.85 points. The BSE midcap index was ruling 0.67 percent higher, while the BSE smallcap index was up 0.2 percent.
