Mahindra Satyam recalls 2000 virtual pool staff
Monday,01 February 2010, 18:46 hrs

Bangalore: Following the strong performance in the manufacturing and infrastructure sector in the last six months by Mahindra Satyam, the company plans to hire more number of employees in the running fiscal, and also recalled 2,000 virtual pool employees, reports CNBC-TV18.

Even though the company has witnessed a dip in its headcount by 43 percent since September 2008, it plans to hire up to 200 fresh graduates and 200 lateral employees in FY11. In June 2009, the company had announced a virtual pool programme (VPP) under which about 6,000 employees were sent home.

According to the sources, the top management from the company said that it was engaged in selective hiring in specialized skill sets. However, it wil give priority to the people on virtual pool.

3: pt 3 . Management needs to be deeply scrutinized. Too often they take a hands off approach, leaving critical issues and important work to those under them already overburdened who might be asking for assistance or guidance to resolve such matters. At 2 or 3 times average salaries they could at least pick up the phone and put their so called wisdom to good use. Few Managers take time to actually help, being so caught up in their own arrogance or incompetence to bother.

Lastly, the related common problem of boss brown nosers who seem to get undeserved promotions and raises. A slow poke with poor skills with a year of experience can end up a band above you in no time if he knows the right guy...

This will be a great company after modernizing, but it depends on smart execs ditching status quo minded upper and middle management and replacing with those who are adaptable, nimble, creative and get results. Not necessarily younger, just smarter. Until then it will stagnate as it has done for years, being a company who follows, not leads.

4: pt 2 . Another obvious point is if this company wants to be taken seriously on a global scale, why are no Women in top Executive and Management positions? Its a guys game (an old boys club) where even within that clique if you arent the right caste, you wont move up. What a sad, dusty old outdated attitude, 20 years behind the leaders of the pack.

What no one talks about is that in the US the company name has become embarrassing. Employees are reluctant to admit where they work when asked. In some areas they are literally being shunned by now companies who dont need the hassle even though offered better rates than competitors. Funny thing, those same companies might lure away employees by promising slightly better pay and promise a Green Card, which is unethical, damages unity, steals talent, but often they dont actually give it as promised, despicable.

5: After the Jan 7th scandal they have been hemorrahging talent and only the rotten apples are left, all buddies sticking together like rats on a raft in the ocean. makes me wonder if they didnt profit somehow from the fraud by selling shares early? The attrition rate has skyrocketed, more in the last 3 months than ever before. If I were on bench id be skeptical when considering rejoining, especially when there are many other choices.

For those doing the majority of the real work the workload is nonstop, pay has never increased despite company profit made this year AND some of the Jan 7th funds have been recouped.

Those laughable moral booster emails that Murthy sends to everyone? Amateurish and silly. Says a lot about the mindset of the top, how old fashioned and outdated they are, treating employees like children at school, showing no respect, never asking opinions or offering respectable incentives or rewarding good work, e tc.

12: This is just a new stunt of PR agencies for Mahindra & Satyam. The fact is that no company works for employee. It's all about business and money for which company hire and fire you. People who have been laid off are not sitting mum, they all are looking for jon and many of them have got job in some other company. My suggestion is that don't try to be loyal to any company otherwise you will get heart stroke at any point of time.

13: Sign the offer letter for the company and at the same time get one letter signed by company for you. The letter would cover the facts so that no way employee will be responsible for any kind of false acts that company is making show up of, and that, employee would be kept retained in case project is proven non-existing or false for that matter of fact. I may not be clear in my words but I want employees to come up with something called counter part of offer letter in order to safeguard employees from the mishaps like the one faced by Satyam Employees.

16: Please take this as friendly criticism and not harshly but this kind of street talk, terrible spelling and short grunts isnt accepted in normal adult society or the workplace and isnt professional. The faster you grow out of talking in such a school slang, quick texting style the better for your career and reputation. Certain Indians communicate this way to much which is why people elsewhere are dont take us seriously. They are just nice and dont say so directly, i found out first hand a few times and was terribly embarrassed.

Be Indian, Master English, Think Globally and you will impress the world.

17: At the outset, i congratulate those empoyees for getting back to MAHINDRA SATYAM. Good to know from CNBC TV18, about the hiring back of employees, they knew the process and were part of the system b4, so calling them back will be an advantage to the company. But make sure that this should done as per the REQUIREMENT only.

22: Those employees who were sincere and committed, will do well, if they are recalled. They will be extremely hard working - in Hyderabad, in any gathering of 10 persons, you were bound to get one Satyam employee/contact - it had built up a very good image, which those employees who were loyal, cannot forget

23:Hmm, not necessarily. They still have to deal with low pay and bearing the burden of a poor reputation. For now freshers and those on bench might be better off looking elsewhere.

The internal culture hasnt changed and hard headed dinosaurs are still running things. A few good people cling on but are fighting a losing battle. Please read recent comments posted at top for reasons why Satyam is in bad shape and wont improve until internal structural change happens. In other words, massive house cleaning.

Smooth skills wont necessarily keep your job but its an asset you keep for life, which can help get you a better job any time. For those who dont bother.... fewer choices, less pay.

28: What he is saying is true. Having poor mastery of words, using slang, broken English or odd phrasing, you will stand out from the more polished, educated crowd who will get ahead.

Strong communication skills are critical to success in business. It attracts people, not repels them to speak well. I can tell you in this global work environment you only make life difficult for yourself by not caring about developing it, and in fact some people laugh at you behind you back when you dont bother. If you want to stay offshore all your life, never travel or never move up professionally, keep relying on lousy skills and make excuses. Or you can simply take a little time every day to improve your vocabulary and practice practice practice speaking and writing well. The brain loves learning, it shouldnt be hard unless you dont want to change or wont put in the time.

33:We shall see how Mahindra can restructure Satyam, they are absorbing it completely by June July or so. Will likely be more layoffs but because of corruption and favoritism not at the top or in Management where it needs to be cleared out.

As i said in other posts here, the internal culture is where serious issues remain, plus the Satyam company name is damaged beyond repair. Every sector needs improving, modernization, some US and UK advertising.

Too many people insiders over 30 or 35 are stuck in the past and do things the old way, which may benefit them personally a little in the short run but hurts themselves, and us overall. People need to start thinking bigger, see how things are interconnected, not be only concerned with their personal situation.

I wil only tell you three pts..
1. This company gave a career..
2. I agree its fame has come down, but where is your loyalty in it?
3. Wait for the letter but at the same time do not waste your career options. Try for another company be it a small software company. If you get letter talk to hr and said bye.

43:People are leaving in droves, for good reasons listed in my long 3 part posting... see top of page for those most recent comments. Even after the Jan 7th scandal the problems that were there before have festered and grown, the company promises a lot to customers but has trouble consistantly delivering. Early on the Satyam company name became poison, like Enron. Little can be done to repair the damaged reputation. Growing new business with that dark cloud hanging over in this terrible recession is nearly impossible.

Mahindra simply needs to drop the name and absorb the best, ditch the rest, which means remaking the company. Get rid of the useless old management guys that BS people as a way of doing business and stab their peers in the back. They are remnants from a bygone era who arent modern enough to compete and win. They want the paycheck to keep rolling in and do what it takes to get theirs, theres no leadership, loyalty or sense of friendliness or goodwill with coworkers.
