Maharashtra to monitor bio-medical waste disposal

Mumbai: All vehicles carrying hazardous bio-medical waste for disposal in Maharashtra shall be monitored with global positioning system (GPS) devices fitted on them, a pollution board official said Monday. The system has been designed and implemented for the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) by TATA AutoComp Mobility Telematics. MPCB is the first state-level pollution control authority in India to use sophisticated tracking device to check proper collection and disposal of bio-medical wastes to prevent environmental damage and health hazards, the official claimed. MPCB has fitted the GPS devices on more than 140 of its trucks to trace their movement online from a control centre. However, TATA's GPS-based Waste Carrier Truck Management Solution was earlier implemented at the municipal level in Pune and Aurangabad in Maharashtra, New Delhi, Amritsar in Punjab, Guwahati in Assam and Guntur in Andhra Pradesh. The system enables monitoring of vehicles' movement on real-time basis and helps calculate the number of trips of particular vehicles from pick-up source to dumping sites, explained TATA ACMT Ltd chief executive officer Milind Dalal.
