New Delhi: Signalling its intent to draft the Lokpal Bill at the earliest, the government announced the deadline for the committee formed for this purpose, saying “if all cooperate, the Bill will be passed in the monsoon session itself”. Law Minister M Veerappa Moily said the government-appointed committee had set June 30 as the deadline to draft the Bill. “If all cooperate, the Bill will be passed in the monsoon session itself,” Moily, who is also convener of the committee, told reporters in Mysore. Asserting that Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa had welcomed the Lokpal Bill, he said Chief Ministers of all other states should also extend support to it. In Thiruvananthapuram, Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee echoed Moily. Responding to queries on BJP leader L K Advani’s demand that the Lokpal Bill should be introduced and passed in the next session of Parliament itself, Mukherjee said “we are glad to get it passed if the Opposition co-operated”. “I really welcome the suggestion. The BJP is the principal opposition party. If he (Advani) prevails upon his members, we will be too glad to get it passed without sending it to the Standing Committee. But instead of making announcements from the platform, let him ensure that his members in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha will co-operate with us,” Mukherjee told reporters at the KPCC headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram.
