Leaders throng 'India's great technology leader conference'

Bangalore: Visionaries across India converged for a discussion on leadership and technology at 'India's Great Technology Leaders Conference' held in Bangalore on January 15th, 2009. Organized by Great CIO, the highlight of the event was 'The George Boole Medal of Honour' named after George Boole, one of the founding fathers of Computer Science and the creator of the Boolean Algebra, the mother tongue of software coding. 'The George Boole Medal of Honour' is awarded annually to an individual, a team or organization, for their profound and consistent contribution to India's development through their endeavors in the field of information technology. The Chief Mentor of Infosys Narayana Murthy, has been selected as the first recipient of The George Boole Medal of Honour, for his contribution in developing the information technology sector in India. The award, consisting of a medal of honour and a cash award of 1,50,000, was presented to Murthy by Wg Cdr Rakesh Sharma, the first Indian in space. In his keynote, Narayana Murthy emphasized on cost reduction as the need of the hour. "So, one of the ways for the companies is to embrace cloud computing in a large scale. That will only happen if awareness about the concept is spread. However, generally speaking, researches in software technologies are lagging by a decade compared to that in hardware," he said. The conference saw discussions by some of the key people in the industry including Ashok Soota, Chairman and MD, Mindtree on the topic 'Leadership in Difficult Times' and Ganesh Natarajan, Chairman of Nasscom, Global CEO of Zensar on the topic 'Technology entrepreneurship-an opportunity and a challenge in a slowdown'. There will be another discussion led by Jai Menon, Director, Bharti Airtel and Group CIO, Bharti Enterprises change and a 30-minute interactive session by Narayana Murthy, Chairman and Chief Mentor, Infosys with the audience. The conference also included a CIO Panel on 'The worst mistakes that IT Leaders can make and how to avoid them'. Panel was led by Abnash Singh, President, IT Operations Center of Excellence, UCB Pharma, Lalit Sawhney, Management and IT Consultant, Sunil Mehta, Senior Vice President and Area Systems Director - Central Asia and Vijay Mahajan, Head- IT Infrastructure and Information Security, M&M. It will also honor the top visionaries in Indian information technological space with awards.
