L&T too joins race for GE's BPO

MUMBAI: L&T Information Technologies , the infotech arm of engineering major Larsen & Toubro (L&T), is a surprise bidder for a part of the business process outsourcing (BPO) operations of global giant General Electric, industry sources said told Economic Times. The other bidders include Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Infosys Technologies, Satyam Computer, Wipro and HCL Technologies. GE, through its arm, GE Capital Services International (GECSI) is selling a portion of its BPO operations in India in an attempt to exit low-margin areas. The IT help desk and network security are the two segments GE wants to exit. GE employs about 12,000 people in its Indian outfit and runs one of the most successful MNC BPO operation. Citigroup Global Markets is GE’s advisor to the sale. Industry sources said L&T, which owns 100 per cent of the infotech arm, is keen on entering the BPO business. It now offers software services and domain, business and technology solutions . It employs more than 2,200 people.
