NEW DELHI: Engineering and construction major Larsen & Toubro (L&T) said it has bagged a 537.60 million contract to construct the longest flyover in the capital that will connect it to suburban Dwarka. The company said Wednesday that it would build the four-lane, 2,147-metre-long flyover connecting this city to Dwarka, a sprawling suburban neighbourhood developed by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to house 1.1 million people. The turnkey project to be completed in 30 months would involve construction of the flyover and service roads as well as the drainage and electrification work, L&T said in a statement to the Bombay Stock Exchange. Defence Minister George Fernandes had on October 11 laid the foundation stone of the flyover, one of many under construction to ease traffic flow in this congested city of 15 million people. In the past four years, 26 flyovers have been built in Delhi. Around 20 more are expected to come up in the next two years. The Dwarka flyover design will be developed by L&T-Ramboll Consulting Engineers, a joint venture engineering consultancy firm of L&T, Ramboll, Hannemann and Hojlund A/S of Denmark, in association with the Danish Industrialisation Fund for Developing Countries. And L&T's construction division Engineering Construction & Contracts (ECC) will execute the project. The fish belly-shaped flyover deck will be supported on 75 single piers, which will enable traffic flow right under the flyover, L&T said.
