Kerala seeks more central public sector units

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala will ask the central government to set up more public sector units and centre-state joint ventures in the state to spur its industrial development, Industries Minister Elamaram Kareem said Friday. Kareem told IANS here that he would go to Delhi next week to discuss the state's demands with Defence Minister A.K. Antony and Heavy Industries Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh. "During the previous government, Kerala got five joint ventures and three central public sector units. This time I am meeting these two ministers with proposals for more projects," Kareem said. The Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), Bharat Earth Movers Ltd (BEML) and Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) are the central public firms that are setting up their units in Kerala. The joint venture deals were reached between Bharat Heavy Electricals and Kerala Electrical and Allied Engineering; NTPC and Transformers and Electricals Kerala; Steel Authority of India and Steel Industries Ltd Kerala; Indian Railways and Autocast and Brahmos and Kerala Hitech Industries.
