Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Wednesday expressed its desire to host two major events in the near future - the next edition of the global Indian diaspora conclave, and the 2017 Under-17 football World Cup.

"At the recently concluded Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas, Kerala expressed desire that the next edition of this mega meet of the Indian diaspora be held here. We had already told this to Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi, and at the cabinet meet we decided to request the centre that the next one be held here," Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told reporters here.

"The Keralites abroad constitute 10 percent of the total diaspora from the country and their contribution by way of remittances is as high as 20 percent. And hence, we want the 11th Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas to be held here," he said.

With the 2017 U-17 Football World Cup allotted to India, the Kerala Football Association had requested the state government to see that Kerala makes a bid to stage that event.

"We have asked the Kochi Corporation and the Greater Kochi Development Authority to see that they make all arrangements to see that the stadiums are ready to stage the event," said Chandy.
