RANCHI: Police officers in Jharkhand are getting a crash course in computers. For the first phase of the course, which began a fortnight ago, nearly 500 personnel from constables to senior officers have been selected. Inspector General Rakesh Jaruhar said the 40-hour special training would be completed in six months. Classes are held for two hours on alternate days. NIIT, a leading computer training institute, has been contracted for the job and is charging 2,700 per officer. "The idea behind crash course is to make police officers familiar with computers. In the coming days nearly all departments of the police force will be equipped with computers," Jaruhar said. "Now any data related with police work will be fed into computers and all the districts and police headquarters will be connected through a dedicated communication network. The data will be coded to maintain secrecy." "My children are acquainted with computers and try to help me at home. On a single click one can get information. It will definitely help the police to work fast," said an inspector general attending the course. And the police officers are proving model pupils. "We never feel that we are imparting education to cops, including senior officers. In the lab room they behave like good students," said Ravi Jha, an NIIT instructor.
