Mumbai: In a bid to tap growing passenger traffic between the US and India, leading private carrier Jet Airways Tuesday announced a code-sharing agreement with US private carrier American Airlines for some domestic flights out of New York. Code sharing refers to a practice where a flight operated by an airline is jointly marketed as a flight for one or more other airlines. The private carrier said that the partnership, subject to regulatory approvals, would be effective from Jan 16, 2008. Jet Airlines will place it 9W designator code on certain American Airlines' domestic flights out of New York's John F. Kennedy Airport. In turn, American Airlines will place its AA designator code on Jet Airways flights to some cities in India. At present, Jet Airways operates daily flights between India and New York via its Brussels hub, while American Airlines flies non-stop services between its Chicago hub and New Delhi. "American Airlines and Jet Airways will 'codeshare' and cooperate on traffic between the US and India that connects at Brussels airport as well as hope to expand their 'codeshare' cooperation on other routes in the months ahead," a company release said. "The partnership between American Airlines and Jet Airways will combine excellent service with world-class operations, thus supporting our strategy of international growth," said Jet Airways CEO Wolfgang Prock-Schauer. "The cooperation between Jet Airways and American Airlines will result in more options for our customers travelling between the US and India," he added. "This mutually rewarding partnership will extend our reach into the US and deliver several benefits to our customers, such as a wider choice of destinations with excellent connections, frequent flyer benefits on 'codeshare' flights, seamless transfers and interline e-ticketing," said Prock-Schauer.
