NEW DELHI: When the Forbes list of super rich was announced last week, everyone was surprised with the inclusion of Lakshmi Mittal in the third place. But one surprising inclusion was that of Naresh Goyal, Chairman of India’s largest private airlines Jet Airways. A first time entry, Goyal holds 80 percent stake in the company, which recently came out with its initial public offering to raise about Rs 19 billion ($435 million). His net worth has been put at $1.5 billion by Forbes. Unlike many other billionaires, the 57-year-old Goyal began rather modestly. About 30 years ago, he ran an airline general sales agency in Delhi, before his entrepreneurial acumen saw his business boom. He launched Jet Airways in 1993 with four leased Boeing 737 aircraft. Jet currently has a fleet of 42 aircraft fleet and is set to buy 10 new planes. The airline also flies to Southeast Asian nations and will soon take to English and American skies.
