Is Murthy following Nilekani's footsteps?
Bangalore: NR Narayana Murthy on Thursday stepped down as the Director of NDTV, raising doubts if he could be following the footsteps of Nandan Nilekani. NDTV informed the stock exchanges that Murthy has expressed his inability to continue on its board because of his other commitments but has agreed to act as a Mentor. Earlier in a television interview, Murthy had said that he would take up responsibilities in the public domain if something interesting comes his way. Murthy who was the Chairman of the Board and Chief Mentor of Infosys was acting as the Non-Executive Independent Director of NDTV. "In view of increasing pressure on his time and due to his commitments within and outside Infosys, NR Narayana Murthy has expressed his inability to continue as a director on the board of Directors of the company with immediate effect," said a filing by NDTV. The filing further added that "Murthy has agreed to act as mentor for New Delhi Television." NDTV said, "The board of directors and the company place on record their deep appreciation of the valuable contribution of Murthy as a Director during his tenure on the board." In July, Infosys Co-founder Nandan Nilekani stepped down from the Board of Infosys, of which he was the Co-chairman, to take over as Chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the Indian government's ambitious project to provide every citizen with a unique biometric identity card.
