Is India not a peaceful place to live in?

The Global Peace Index is an initiative of the Institute for Killelea's Economics and Peace, an international think tank that explores relationships between business, peace and economic development.
Now in its fifth year, the GPI measures the relative peacefulness of 153 countries by looking at both qualitative and quantitative indicators that combine internal and external factors determining a nation's peacefulness. These include arms imports and exports, violent crime, battlefield deaths, prison populations, potential for terrorism, political stability and the likelihood of violent demonstrations. The Index also seeks to understand how peace impacts global economics and business, and vice versa.
Iceland topped the ranking as the World's most peaceful nation and Somalia ranked the least as the World's least peaceful nation among the 153 nations. Steve Killelea, founder of the Global Peace Index said that India fell by 7 points and the fall in rankings is largely due to an increasing perception of criminality in society. He mentioned that the increased perception of violence in India was because of the repeated terror attacks in the recent times which makes people insecure and also made it a volatile neighborhood.
The advisory panel apportioned scores based on the relative importance of each of the indicators on a 1-5 scale. Two sub-component weighted indices were then calculated from the GPI group of indicators: 1) a measure of how at peace internally a country is; 2) a measure of how at peace externally a country is. The overall composite score and index was then formulated by applying a weight of 60 percent to the measure of internal peace and 40 percent for external peace.
India's total score was 2.570. A few details of the peace indicators scores are as follows, Number of external and internal conflicts fought -5, Relations with neighboring countries-4, Number of displaced people as a percentage of the population-1, Level of disrespect for human rights-4, Potential for terriorist acts-4, Number of homicides per 100,000 people-2, Level of violent crime-3, Ease of access to small arms and light weapons-4, Military capability/sophistication-4 and Political instability-1.25.
India's score remains the same on most parameters compared to its last year scores. Homicide and crime rates in India, too, are a lot lower than many other countries but the fall in rankings is largely due to an increasing perception of criminality in society.
Steve said "Despite a decade-long war on terrorism, the potential for terrorist acts has increased this year offsetting small gains made in prior years". "The fall in this year's Index is strongly tied to conflict between citizens and their governments; nations need to look at new ways of creating stability other than through military force," said Steve Killelea. The GPI shows that for the third consecutive year, levels of peacefulness have dropped across the globe. The uprising in the Arab world and parts of Africa had much to do with an increase in global violence this time around.

I don't believe this GPI,they produce foolish reports, can we know the basis criteria for this ranking.Pak is terror state in the globe how can GPI can include India in this category.I believe GPI also wants to crush India from the super power and GPI accepts that terror good for the country like pak.they are idots

A restraining order was taken against a deranged, vicious, Bengali known by the name of Swarup Sengupta of New Mexico State University/East Texas State University for attacking an Indian student, making harassing phone calls to him, knocking loudly at his paratment in middle of nights, prodding his Indian friends to harass him. Mr Swarup sengupta worked for a physics professor, a punjabi chopra who started all this by illegally putting Swarup Sengupta at an aparment where this Indian student was a roommate of another Indian. Swarup Sengupta started by trying to intimidat ethe Indian student, then locking him outsidse in 40C heat and going through his belongings. The harassed Indian studenty had to leave the apartment ultimately. Then Swarup Sengupta proceeded to assault him, ask his frienmd sto harass him, make anonymous phone calls to him for almost 2 years.
This is how Indians harass other Indians. They not only have contempt for others. They try to make a fool out of other Indians. The worst people I have met in foreign countries are Indians. Majority of them have no manners and they are arrogant.

Just ignore this stupid report. It doesn't mean anything. India is a far more peaceful nation than many Gora nations. But everytime you read one of these global index things, they will always say that the best countries are sweden, norway, denmark, finland, etc etc. By the same token, the best place in the world to live in is Antartica: zero violence, no economic crisis, no ethnic clashes and no wars.

Country has always been divided, specially after independence. Now the nation, India, is nothing less then a set of 8 small countries in its own, states, casts, languages, colour, all pointing to a undercurrent that this is actually a 8 country set.

some Chandigarh based company guy from India who thought it was a real rep of Mining compnay gave him all details of his company at Chandigarh
Anyway the reporter upon reaching India ,,asked the copnay guy do a demo and he shot that and then when he reached New Delhi actually the guy told him one needs Indian police permission to get the remote control to detonate ,,he also showed some suitcase carrying person I do not know maybe himself pass through security at the CWG stadium ,,infact he never passed through any gate ,,actually he was just diverted by a traffic constable at cwg stadia intersection a few hundred yards away from CWG stadia main gate

Ratings, that too by a western countries is just not worth taking cognizance. All global ratings are either americal originated or euro-centric which do not have a value for human sentiments or connections. They make these as the best countries for living in, working, cost of living Unemployment is high in all these countries, family life is not in existent, social life not known to any one, and yet they always seem to be holding the top 20 positions!

Vajpayee made a mistake. But UPA followed it up vigorously with further opening of visas,train routes. Even after Mumbai atatcks this govt is not wiiling to kill the lone terrorist but spending tax payers money to protect him.And for minority votes,MMS may not mind inviting all Pakis to settle in India.

Ridiculous ratings. Like almost all "global indices" it is euro-centric. The best countries for living in, working, cost of living , and anything else always seem to be the tiny european states - Belgium, Denmark, Netherlands, etc. Unemployment is high in all these countries, family life is often inexistant, social life is costly, and yet they always seem to be holding the top 20 positions!

We should also not forget that mighty european powers, viz. UK, and developed countries like USA are still under constant threat of terrorism. So the decision to protray India under top twenty least peaceful countries is biased.

Thanks Gaurav and Mohammed Ali. All these global indices are rubbish. They are created by Europeans to give themselves a "feel good" sense. They think that every Indian wants to migrate to U.S. or Europe. I'm a person of Indian origin, born outside India and living in Europe for 30 years. I have only been to India to visit distant relatives, never lived in India. But only in India I really feel that I'm at home, not in either Europe or in my birth country, because nobody treats me like an unwanted stranger here. Contrary to all the rubbish that european journalists write about India, Indian people are generally peaceful and cooperative. Compared to the population and size of the country the number of violent crimes are very few. And if there hadn't been so much govt control leading to corruption in the past decades, foreigners would be begging to come and settle in India. So no problem guys, I will still say Jai Hind any time. Best country in the world.

Many people in India are still poor, but hard working, optimistic , tolerant, very peaceful and happy.

they never think of their nation and they just sell their valuble vote just they will sell it for only few hundreds or a liquor bottle every politician will joine with an intentation to change the country but they are getting changed on seeing this public. and the educated people like u and me are not going into the people and educate them we just log on to our blogs and give comments to which we had posted earlier.then how can a nation can change....?

Have you been to other countries before making a void comment..."India is peaceful and best". If not you are like a frog living in his own well who thinks it is the best place in the world". This i should say is a miserable problem with India.
I have been to India and it has so much to improve on. A lot of things needs to start from scratch. And all this is happening at a tortoise pace...i guess the people love the country but government doesnt...
