Internet startups fail to meet VCs expectations

Many internet companies rely on online advertisement for revenue. They might find it difficult to survive due to low internet users. The internet advertisement revenue in country is $200 million, but majority of it is generated by Google. Few VCs feel that internet companies have not found the correct business model. "The business models that work abroad do not necessarily work in India," says Ritesh Banglani, Senior Investment Advisor, IDG Ventures India.
According to Alok Mittal, General Partner, Canaan Partners, the most successful internet companies in India are subscription based or lead generating like Naukri.com. But despite not meeting expected results, internet companies are still amongst the most favored by VCs. "We expect these companies to do better as when the internet penetration picks up and monetization models are clearer," said DFJ's Maheshwari.
According to Venture Intelligence, 21 percent of the VC deals struck between July 2008 and June 2009 were in internet services. The value of these deals was around $120 million.

As far as my understanding work internet in india will take time because of the understanding of english spoken and understanding population, and even those who are well versed with it even hesitate to transact online. So it is again a challenge. For online revenue retails customers are the best as they will continue to be a right buyers for the online continue flow of revenue. EVEN MY EXPERIENCE THEY ARE ALL RECESSION PROOF. because of less investment into online.

Yeah - the rubber on the roads part is spot on!
The internet, by and large, replaced TV in India. Not malls, not utilities, etc. Some businesses have engaged a portion of of their consumers by using the web as a (cheaper) channel, but by and large, real business happens outside of the not-that-much-of-an-idiot-box.
Its not a question of lack of innovation (that'll happen), or of merely "following" a model from someplace else. Its the vacuum of real-life and real-biz requirements that causes the same to be more or less dreamt up over coffee - and with little follow-up validation.
A little more rubber off the soles, a little more connection with real needs, and the right ideas, right innovation and decent success are likely follow...

Let the govt bring in a broadband stimulus package. And pump in some money into the infrastructure. All western companies will automatically get into funding and more innovation happens.

I think government would not do any thing more. They already permitted many operators in the field. It is for them to set up the infrastructure.

The problem lies in that Indian Internet startups are mostly copycats who lack any new innovation.
And part of the reason is the VCs in India mostly invest in tried and tested services and like most of our companies are not interested in innovation or new revenue streams.
So it is not a problem with all internet startups but startups that have a standard revenue model succed in attracting VC funding but then they can not deliver.

High speed broadband connectivity still is at a very high cost in India. Until that goes down, we cannot hope for the traffic to grow and broadband to be more penetrating. Most of these companies are into profit making as a real goal vs. giving benefits to the end user.
