KOLKATA: Intel India will launch its community PC by the first quarter of next year. The PC is still in prototype stage. The community PC program will withstand the ruggedness and erratic power supply condition of rural India, R K Amar Babu, Director, (S Asia) Sales & Marketing group said. Babu, however neither disclosed Intel’s investment in the program nor the specifications of the computer. Babu said, “We are already doing the pilot project in 20 villages to see how the system works. Then by the year-end we will send to ODMs to Taiwan for designing the box. We will hand over the system to our national and local PC partners like HCL and Zenith for further assembling and manufacturing of the PCs.” Though the PC will not be low- cost PCs, it will take care of issues like dust and erratic power supply. “The PC will have the option to use car battery in case of a power failure,” said Babu. He said this kind of PC would meet the e-governance requirements, from keeping land records to provide various services like birth and death certificates.
