BANGALORE: Intel engineers in India are designing a processor for the server market, which will be out very soon. The development of the server chip is a first for the company. The chip is a next-generation server chip, according to Intel President Ketan Sampat. He did not discuss code-names, but Intel does have a Xeon chip on its roadmap code-named Whitefield coming in 2007 that will be able to fit in both Itainum-based and Xeon-based servers. Whitefield is the name of the road leading to one of Bangalore's tech parks. Although it's the first processor, it won't be Intel's first Indian chip. A 915 chipset released earlier this year was developed at the Bangalore facilities. A successful chip can raise the prominence of a regional office at Intel. The Pentium M for notebooks and the Centrino chip bundle were made in Israel.
