Infineon, Nokia to push LTE radios towards 1Gbit/s

London: Semiconductor firm Infineon and handset maker Nokia have said they are going to cooperate on the development of Radio frequency (RF) transceivers for use in Long Term Evolution (LTE) wireless communications. The work could lead to systems which can deliver 1-Gbit per second data transfer rates. The agreement covers a non-exclusive collaboration to make sure Nokia's baseband modem technologies work with Infineon's RF chips.
As Nokia is prepared to license out its modem designs the collaboration will give the electronics industry access to complete modem solutions for HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) through LTE, Infineon said.
Infineon did not indicate how many engineers would work on the project, or for how long, reports EE Times. But the collaboration involves teams from both companies working on the architectural and system challenges with the compatibility verified by way of a technology reference platform. The work is expected to contribute to the LTE-Advanced standard enabling data rates of up to 1Gbit per second.
Infineon did not say when the 1-Gbit/s wireless data rate would be achieved or when the Infineon-Nokia verification platform would be demonstrated. "We are grateful to expand our successful collaboration with Nokia beyond our current platform and RF activities," said Hermann Eul, member of the Infineon Management Board. "Taking advantage of each company's expertise as leaders in their respective fields, this cooperation will help to deliver standard-based, industry-leading solutions for mobile internet devices," said Pekka Sarlund, Vice President of Wireless Modems at Nokia.
