India's telecom equipment market grows 43 percent

New Delhi: India's telecom equipment market grew by a robust 43.5 percent in 2006-07 to top 771.17 billion ($18.8 billion) with mobile and fixed-line handsets business expanding by 45 percent, says a survey released Monday. Carrier equipment contributed 55 percent to the overall market, while the share of handsets and enterprise equipment stood at 30 percent and 14 percent, respectively, says the 12th such survey conducted by Voice and Data magazine. The survey also revealed that Finnish telecom equipment giant Nokia retained its top position in mobile handsets with a 54 percent share, followed by Ericsson of Sweden and the US-based Motorola. Alcatel-Lucent at number five and China's ZTE at number 10 were the new entrants to the top 10 list, while South Korea's LG Electronics, which stood second in 2005-06, slid to number seven. The survey found that Cisco had nearly three-fourths of the switches market and with D-Link and Nortel. In the outer market, too, Cisco was the market leader followed by Juniper at a distant second with 10 percent share.
