Singapore:Singapore's Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew has exhorted Indian political leaders to follow the ideals cherished by Infosys founder N.R. Narayana Murthy in order to set the country on a rapid trajectory of high growth and development.
Describing Narayana Murthy as an "exceptional" entrepreneur, Lee hailed his contribution to the phenomenal success of the information technology sector in India, extolling his humility, social awareness and simple living habits as qualities to be emulated.
"If all Indian ministers and top bureaucrats were like him - hard-working, tough taskmasters, hard negotiators, but always forward-looking - India will be one of the fastest growing countries in the world, and in one generation, will become a First World country," Lee exhorted Monday.
Lee, the founder of modern Singapore and the man behind the city-state's phenomenal success story, was speaking at the launch of Narayana Murthy's recent book, "A Better India: A Better World," at a function at the Global Indian International School campus here.
But well aware of the scale of the task ahead in India, Lee said "no single person can change India's system of governance to become as efficient as Infosys."
He also referred to the limitations in India's political process, which he said stop it from "going at high speed."
"Whatever the political leadership wants to do, it must go through a very complex system at the centre, and then an even more complex system in the various states," he said.
Drawing from the experience he has gained in the IT industry over the past two decades, Narayana Murthy said that exemplary work ethics, honesty, discipline and an openness to new ideas were the key pillars to ensure that India's emerging economy was "inclusive, fair and equitable."
The book, a collection of speeches that Narayana Murthy has rendered over the past few years, outlines what he lists as critical ingredients for the nation's development: ethical social values, honest trustworthy leaders and an open mindset.
The liberation of the "colonial mindset" by the elite and powerful in a post-colonial society had to be a fundamental requirement if the gains of economic growth were to be shared more equitably, he said.
He rated these three pillars of development as even more important than the traditional ingredients of capital, technology, labour and natural resources which have been viewed as the foundation for industrial wealth.
Narayana Murthy cited Singapore as the best example of the core values that he was advancing. "Singapore is a real example of a country that has transformed herself from a Third World to a First World country," and "all in an environment of peace and harmony in a multicultural world."
He attributed Singapore's success to a "cadre of aspirational and value-based leadership which has led by example."

1: Yes, I do understand that some people can't
understand what Mr.Murthy has said. You know
what i mean, you still don't have the ability
to understand how great minds work and what
they mean when they say something. Mr.Murthy
is still a cheif mentor for over a lakh
employeed company which is also one of the
most respected companies in the world.
So, I advise you all to Listen to some of his Speeches probably you could understand some thing.

4: Surely NMu Only listened to his conscious and
didnot debate the political issues rather
understood and found a way to workout the way
to walk the tight rope with the cicumstances
in the times of his action and disciplined
himself to responsibility to take action to
be Praise worthy of every one today. We
definately are still lucky as Indians that
People like H H Lee can remind us of our
unconcious hidden agendas that we like to
follow and not the Truth of Universal order
of Humanity. Its not about NMu or Lee.They
have alwayas been there in reference. We need
to Look into only ourself very Truthfully and
not act not on the Hidden agendaas But count
the status to bring them to surface and not
Play the Politics of Hiding behind systems of
Politics and Politicions in every thought and
action of ours.Get ready..Are you? Then join
Me at the source and be NMu with real
values.We will not need Lee'S

7: I think most people are too simplistic to
believe that being excellent and successful
in one segment of life automatically will
make anyone successful in any other field
--however different and complex it may be.
I am a great admirer of NR Murthy as a corporate leader , businessman , visionary , and also his simplicity, honesty and integrity etc--but these virtues alone will not make a politician a true people`s leader. Politics is a very very complex ball game and requires extremely complex and intelligent and yet simple handling of people, issues, and policies . It is not that we do not have such leaders here in India --We have APJ Kalam , Medha Patkar, Anna hazare , Baba Amte ( now no more ) Kiran Bedi, Arundhati Roy, and scores of honest and upright civil service and military officers who are all silently serving this country ---yet none of them could or perhaps ever wanted to become political leaders in spite of their passionate commitments to causes they stand for . NRM himself has reservations about his success in politics which he expressed in an interview . Political leadership in the true sense requires an ability and passion and intelligence to grapple with very complex dynamics of world wide interplay of factors, policies, people and their aspirations --besides an ability to translate them into meaningful action plans in specific contextual framework . there is no -one size fits all formula -in a complex India .

9: I have gone through the article and reader's
comments too and I found it amusing to have
varied opinions.
But is it not true that however bitter it may be but still its a fact. Indian population, which was considered to be a liability, has turned out to be its greatest asset. We in India do have all the necessary elements to be a progressive country, may it be natural resources, human resources, Knowledge bank or the ability to work with untiring efforts but still we have not achieved what we deserve. Politicians have always cashed upon people's sentiments and I really dont understand why people amongst us gets carried away and choose those who are expected to run our country on the basis of class, color and creed. In some parts people make a deal against their own future and the future of up coming generations for just a few hundred rupees or a blanket, or some liquor and then keep on wailing for five long years that our representatives are not worth. But amazingly the same cycle repeats itself after every five years.
"Barbad chaman ko karne ko jab ek hi ullu kaafi tha
Har shaakh pe ullu baitha hai anjaame gulistaan kya hoga"
We should not expect any leader to come forward and pull us out from this deep well of miseries, instead people at large should come forward to falsify the saying that Politics is a dirty game. Its our duty to be honest in all our deeds and thoughts if we dream a Utopian country and the it happens India will be the greatest of all nations. We dont need representatives of people instead we need people to make it happen.

11: Doesn't it sounds odd when somebody from
outside would tell something about our
Government and Country.
I respect the values of Mr Murthy, what he has created and done for the Country is invaluable.
But what about our Politicians are they really corrupted or they are doing things for the country noone can do anything.
This is India and we people would be atleast 20 years back from America.

12:How do you expect our political leaders will
appreciate Mr Narayan Murthy? . Our Leaders
will get allergy if his topic comes in.
our leaders understand only two things
1. How to fool the uneducated and poor for votes to be in power and 2. How to get money from the Industry? They are specialist in this .
In another view As Staford Crips Said
Politics is an artful way of getting votes from the poor and money from the rich by promising each from the other.
The last five words for Crips is thrown away by the politicians leaders today. When our leaders will realize this? will they ever? Just ask one question to them : How do they get such huge money for election campaign? Who are the people assisting them? Where is role of Election Commission? Evey one is shut up during this time. Because all machineries know that their fate will change once any party comes to power. Thats democracy.

rules Singapore -- nepotism at its best just
like India. Lee did not set up Singapore --
he was ably mentored and guided by an unknown
Tamil whom he got rid of within a few years
of coming to power.

We welcome of his views..but it should be followed in india..
I do not think that leaders would be ready for it...
Hard heart is necessary to follow these type of things ...
Leadres.....now this is the time to show your leadership .now world is seeing around us.
please learn with Narayana Murthy....Narayana Murthy has told and his sound is gone to Singapore ans he is niminated and as example of him... the core values that he was advancing. "Singapore is a real example of a country that has transformed himself from a 3rd World to a very first World country," and "all in an environment of peace and harmony in a multicultural ..adverse world."
We hope..

18: Well said Your Excellence Lee Kuan Yew.
India certainly needs an outsider to be a change agent in the country and what more it comes from a reputable gentleman who led the change in his country. Our political system is dysfunctional. Regret to say this but this is true to the core. We have our political leader mud slinging at each other. What a shame and we have our intellectuals just gazing at whats going around them. What a shame again. Pathetic is not the only word i can describe of our great country INDIA.
Indians like Narayana Murthy who have excelled in their exemplary work ethics, honesty, discipline and an openness to new ideas are definitely the key pillars to ensure that India's emerging economy was inclusive, fair and equitable. Those are suppose to be our Countrys VALUES. Do any of our Ministers understand these values. Ask them.
From a strategic point of view can anyone tell me the COUNTRYs VALUES. Forgive me for my ignorance but are there any values? Please let me know I would very much like to know them and whether they exist well in the Constitution? If they do are they adhered?
All we have is a bunch of political monkeys trying hard to climb the national leadership without a goal without any leadership qualities. Show me which minister really has quality leadership. Once they become a minister they only realise their goals of accumulating the maximum wealth thereby keeping the countrys poor uneducated.
I ask all those of you who have an inborn NATIONALISM to wake up and be a CHANGE AGENT in developing our country.
BE a Nationalist at the core and get these corrupt monkeys out of their chairs where they do not deserve to sit.
As Narayana says the three pillars of development are even more important than the traditional ingredients of capital, technology, labour and natural resources which have been viewed as the foundation for industrial wealth.
Let us all INDIANS, leverage ourselves with these foundations and MAKE INDIA A COUNTRY that every other country may ENVY us.
LET us set an example to the rest of the WORLD.

19:Have your own ideals and strategies. Why
follow someone? Infy Godfather may be great
to some people. But, why 1.14B Indians should
follow him?
We are all living in a democratic country, and just insisting on following someone is a bureaucracy.

20: I think you have mistaken between following
ideas and following a person. Nobody says
follow or trust someone blindly but
undoubtedly Indian political class should
come ahead of vote bank politics and show
some serious concern over the development of
this country. I stay in Mumbai and never
understood why the infrastructure development
is following growth ideally it should have
been other way round. I dont know why we
start digging well when we feel thirsty. When
we have choke ups on roads we start making
flyovers and in the meantime more vehicles go
on road and despite making flyovers we remain
in the same miserable condition. It takes me
more than one hour to cover a distance of
mere 10 Km, is this why we are paying tax to
our government. The 3 pillars that Mr. Murthy
talked about (work ethics, honesty and
discipline) are the traits missing in all our
leaders. I think our political leadership
should take stern steps to regain the
confidence of their people.
