BANGALORE: India's first Fab City with $2 billion investment for manufacturing silicon chips will shortly come up in Hyderabad, Union Communications and IT Minister Dayanidhi Maran announced today. Talking to reporters after addressing the Vision Summit, organized by the India Semiconductor Association here, he said there were three contenders for the prestigious project -- Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Though the states were neck and neck in the race, Andhra Pradesh overtook Karnataka in providing subsidies, facilities like land, water, electricity and other infrastructure facilities to SemIndia for setting up the Fab City. Tamil Nadu lost the race because of its lukewarm response, he added. Lauding the states for competing with each other in setting up the semiconductor plant, he said the plant, to come up in an area of 1,200 acres, would generate 150,000 job opportunities on its completion. Pointing out that India was still in the nascent stage in the semiconductor industry compared to Taiwan, China and Malaysia, the Minister said the industry was poised for an exponential growth. This year was crucial for the country with regard to promoting the semiconductor industry and the survival of the first plant. Maran said the Center was only a facilitator in setting up Fab City plants in the country and would soon come up with a strategy on dealing with issues concerning the setting up of more Fab City plants in the country. States ready to provide proper base with infrastructure facilities for setting up such units would benefit in a big way, particularly in employment generation, he opined.
