India's Aug industrial output up 7.4%

NEW DELHI: India's annual industrial production rose 7.4 percent in August, higher than 6.7 percent in July, boosted by robust manufacturing and electricity sectors, data showed on Monday. Annual output rose 8.6 percent in August 2004. Industrial production grew 8.0 percent for the fiscal year ended March 2005, compared with 7 percent expansion in the year before. Manufacturing production, representing more than 75 percent of industrial output, rose 8.2 percent in August from a year earlier, marginally lower than 8.3 percent in July. Production of consumer goods, such as vehicles and televisions, rose 10.6 percent in August, doubling July's 5.2 percent growth. Capital goods production, a barometer of industrial activity, was up 8.9 percent in August from a year earlier. Mining fell 1.3 percent in August and electricity output rose 7.8 percent.
