Indians to get least paid leaves in a year

New Delhi: Indians are at the bottom of the list when it comes to the number of paid leaves they receive, even though they enjoy the highest number of holidays annually. According to a survey by human resource consultancy firm Mercer, employees in India get the least number of statutory annual leaves (paid leaves), while those in Finland, Brazil and France receive the highest.

The 'Worldwide Benefit and Employment Guidelines' survey says that employees in India get statutory holiday allowances for 12 days, while in Canada and China they get 10 days each. However, workers in Finland, Brazil and France are entitled to as many as 30 days statutory holidays a year, reports PTI.

On the number of public holidays, India is joined by Japan at top. Employees in both the countries are entitled to 16 public holidays in a year. Japan and India are followed by Cyprus, Slovakia and South Korea with 15 public holidays annually. Interestingly, workers in Australia, the UK and the Netherlands are entitled to the least number of public holidays of eight days. The survey analyzed that both the statutory minimum number of holidays that companies must provide to their staff, as well as the number of public holidays in over 40 countries.

"Public holidays tend to be rooted in local tradition or religious beliefs, so it can be difficult to change practices. But with the increasing cultural diversity of the global workforce, there is pressure for greater flexibility around public holidays," said Matthew Hunt, Mercer International Team Principal. The survey figures are based on mandatory entitlements for an employee working five days a week with 10 years of service. In total, employees in Japan are entitled to 36 days off work followed by South Korea (34) and New Zealand (31). While, employees in Australia, Taiwan and India would potentially get 28 days followed by Hong Kong (26), Singapore (25) and China (21).

6:The report probably didn't consider all the earned leaves, casual leaves, sick leaves and importantly the 14 public holidays including various festivals and special national holidays. Not to mention optional special religious holidays. If you include all these, Indians will be at the top of the list in terms of maximum number of paid leaves!

14: Most MNCs in India offer 21 paid holidays plus 10 national holidays which amounts to 31 days off. The US has 15 days paid leave plus 10 national holidays for 25 days total. If you are new to the company you get as little as 5 paid leaves in the year. Don't like it, leave the company, there are 10 other slaves waiting. Surprised though that Japan has more holidays than India. My friends in Japan claim the opposite.

18:Kalyan ,key issue here is that we are not allowed to take all the leaves at one go - so you can never get 31 days off in India whereas you can in US or UK.But then in India we also dont have sick leaves which are unlimited in UK (dont know about US but I am guessing the same)but I guess the reason is justifiable for that :).Hours worked are also higher in India in my opinion based on "the longer u are in office, the harder ur working" syndrome of managers!

Most employees of the government even though inefficient and corrupt are protected by various ways like manipulation of witnesses, bribing etc. Even lawyers and judiciary favours incompetency as it feathers their nest. Besides many bosses prefer inefficient people under them to protect and not to expose their faults also. Efficient and honest try for private jobs which give more salary and benefit. If at all country has to progress better politicians must be paid only average salary and perks of common people and only those those follow the principles of " SERVICE, SACRIFICE and PATRIOTISM " are to be identified and given tickets. Besides people who elect them must have power to remove tbem.

42: We cannot take 2007-09 as a benchmark, because the 2 years have been horrible for both companies and employees.

I think firstly, many are only looking at only IT industry. Indian industry is not just IT. You have auto, iron and steel, tyre, construction, minerals, jewelery, etc. All industries, where certain workforce have 5 day week is what the survey talks about.

But this basis of comparison in the survey itself is wrong. In Europe, a automobile engineer works 5 days, while in India he works 6 days. The Indian figures are mainly IT but other countries they have many industries in the 5 day week.

Most Indian IT guys have a ball of a time at work which a European doesn't get really. We are a pampered lot. We get salary, incentives, apart from outings, family get togethers, coupons, trips, resorts, movies, all in the name of retention.

Programming is a skill as any other, just because some foreign company decided to pay your company in dollars who in turn offered you high salary due to dollar conversion doesn't mean we are anyway bigger or better than the farmer or the next door grocer.

So, in effect, we are in an envious position. Look at China's holiday figures and you know why they are progressing so fast. A day will come when they will be English literate if that is a qualification for IT and will put Indian IT guys at a real problem. The only other thing that can hold back is their communist govt, but believe me, communist or capitalist, if they offer 30 percent lesser rates, every American company will line up to China. It is up to us the `knowledge' industry to gear up, and put our best efforts, instead of crying over holidays and retention benefits.
